Hall effect and transmission electron microscopy of epitaxial MnSi thin films
We present Hall effect measurements on MnSi/Si(111) epilayers and find an anomalous Hall contribution that is significantly smaller than in bulk crystals, which enables the observation of an additional contribution to the anomalous signal previously overlooked in MnSi. Our measurements indicate the signal is not due to skyrmions in MnSi thin films, which are absent in out-of-plane fields, but rather are the result of scattering from the cone phase. The absence of magnetic contrast in the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements are consistent with this interpretation. Mining for diagnostic information in body surface potential maps: A comparison of feature selection techniques
BACKGROUND: In body surface potential mapping, increased spatial sampling is used to allow more accurate detection of a cardiac abnormality. Although diagnostically superior to more conventional electrocardiographic techniques, the perceived complexity of the Body Surface Potential Map (BSPM) acquisition process has prohibited its acceptance in clinical practice. For this reason there is an interest in striking a compromise between the minimum number of electrocardiographic recording sites required to sample the maximum electrocardiographic information. METHODS: In the current study, several techniques widely used in the domains of data mining and knowledge discovery have been employed to mine for diagnostic information in 192 lead BSPMs. In particular, the Single Variable Classifier (SVC) based filter and Sequential Forward Selection (SFS) based wrapper approaches to feature selection have been implemented and evaluated. Using a set of recordings from 116 subjects, the diagnostic ability of subsets of 3, 6, 9, 12, 24 and 32 electrocardiographic recording sites have been evaluated based on their ability to correctly asses the presence or absence of Myocardial Infarction (MI). RESULTS: It was observed that the wrapper approach, using sequential forward selection and a 5 nearest neighbour classifier, was capable of choosing a set of 24 recording sites that could correctly classify 82.8% of BSPMs. Although the filter method performed slightly less favourably, the performance was comparable with a classification accuracy of 79.3%. In addition, experiments were conducted to show how (a) features chosen using the wrapper approach were specific to the classifier used in the selection model, and (b) lead subsets chosen were not necessarily unique. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that both the filter and wrapper approaches adopted were suitable for guiding the choice of recording sites useful for determining the presence of MI. It should be noted however that in this study recording sites have been suggested on their ability to detect disease and such sites may not be optimal for estimating body surface potential distributions
Extragalactic Radio Continuum Surveys and the Transformation of Radio Astronomy
Next-generation radio surveys are about to transform radio astronomy by
discovering and studying tens of millions of previously unknown radio sources.
These surveys will provide new insights to understand the evolution of
galaxies, measuring the evolution of the cosmic star formation rate, and
rivalling traditional techniques in the measurement of fundamental cosmological
parameters. By observing a new volume of observational parameter space, they
are also likely to discover unexpected new phenomena. This review traces the
evolution of extragalactic radio continuum surveys from the earliest days of
radio astronomy to the present, and identifies the challenges that must be

Factors influencing the practice of new graduate nurses : a focused ethnography of acute care settings
Aim: To explore the influence of an acute care setting on competency deployment of new graduate
nurses (NGNs) from a competency
-based undergraduate programme
.
Background: In the last 15 years, nursing education has shifted to competency
-based education
(CBE). Few studies have focused on how NGNs from these reformed programmes use the
competencies they have developed. To be paradigmatically coherent with the nature of a
competence, studies should also examine how context influences nursing practice and competency
deployment.
Design: A focused ethnography of three acute care units from one academic hospital in Canada.
Methods: Purposive and snowball sampling strategies were used to recruit 19 participants: NGNs (n
= 4), nurse preceptors (n = 2), clinical nurse specialists (n = 9)
, and nurse managers (n = 4). Data were
collected through individual interviews, focus groups
, observation and documentation. Data were
analysed according to Roper and Shapiraβs (2000) ethnographic nursing analysis framework.
Results: Organizational and individual factors were identified as influencing NGNs
β competenc
y
deployment. Organizational factors are orientation, stability, workload, and the scientific culture of
the unit. Personal factors have been linked to groups of professionals: for NGNs, personality and
clinical placements during their initial education; for nurses working with NGNs, to be role models,
to promote integration and to denounce bullying; and for other health professionals, to recognize
nursing expertise.
Conclusion: One way to s
mooth the transition from academic to clinical settings for NGNs is by
offering transition or orientation programmes that will provide them with stability and a reduced
workload, allowing them to progressively deploy their competencies.
Relevance to clinical practice: Organizational and individual factors influence how new graduate
nurses deploy their competencies. Clinical educators and nurse managers can help new nurses by
acting on these factors
How Human Brucellosis Incidence in Urban Kampala Can Be Reduced Most Efficiently? A Stochastic Risk Assessment of Informally-Marketed Milk
In Kampala, Uganda, studies have shown a significant incidence of human brucellosis. A stochastic risk assessment involving two field surveys (cattle farms and milk shops) and a medical record survey was conducted to assess the risk of human brucellosis infection through consumption of informally marketed raw milk potentially infected with Brucella abortus in Kampala and to identify the best control options.In the cattle farm survey, sera of 425 cows in 177 herds in the Kampala economic zone were sampled and tested for brucellosis using a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (CELISA). Farmers were interviewed for dairy information. In the milk shop surveys, 135 milk sellers in the urban areas were interviewed and 117 milk samples were collected and tested using an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (IELISA). A medical record survey was conducted in Mulago National Referral Hospital for serological test results. A risk model was developed synthesizing data from these three surveys. Possible control options were prepared based on the model and the reduction of risk was simulated for each scenario. Overall, 12.6% (6.8-18.9: 90%CI) of informally marketed milk in urban Kampala was contaminated with B.abortus at purchase and the annual incidence rate was estimated to be 5.8 (90% CI: 5.3-6.2) per 10,000 people. The best control option would be the construction of a milk boiling centre either in Mbarara, the largest source of milk, or in peri-urban Kampala and to ensure that milk traders always sell milk to the boiling centre; 90% success in enforcing these two options would reduce risk by 47.4% (21.6-70.1: 90%CI) and 82.0% (71.0-89.0: 90%CI), respectively.This study quantifies the risk of human brucellosis infection through informally marketed milk and estimates the incidence rate in Kampala for the first time; risk-based mitigation strategies are outlined to assist in developing policy
Marked variation in MSP-119 antibody responses to malaria in western Kenyan highlands
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Assessment of malaria endemicity at different altitudes and transmission intensities, in the era of dwindling vector densities in the highlands, will provide valuable information for malaria control and surveillance. Measurement of serum anti-malarial antibodies is a useful marker of malaria exposure that indicates long-term transmission potential. We studied the serologic evidence of malaria endemicity at two highland sites along a transmission intensity cline. An improved understanding of the micro-geographic variation in malaria exposure in the highland ecosystems will be relevant in planning effective malaria control.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Total IgG levels to <it>Plasmodium falciparum </it>MSP-1<sub>19 </sub>were measured in an age-stratified cohort (< 5, 5-14 and β₯ 15 years) in 795 participants from an uphill and valley bottom residents during low and high malaria transmission seasons. Antibody prevalence and level was compared between different localities. Regression analysis was performed to examine the association between antibody prevalence and parasite prevalence. Age-specific MSP-1<sub>19 </sub>seroprevalence data was fitted to a simple reversible catalytic model to investigate the relationship between parasite exposure and age.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Higher MSP-1<sub>19 </sub>seroprevalence and density were observed in the valley residents than in the uphill dwellers. Adults (> 15 years) recorded high and stable immune response in spite of changing seasons. Lower responses were observed in children (β€ 15 years), which, fluctuated with changing seasons particularly in the valley residents. In the uphill population, annual seroconversion rate (SCR) was 8.3% and reversion rate was 3.0%, with seroprevalence reaching a plateau of 73.3% by age of 20. Contrary, in the valley bottom population, the annual SCR was 35.8% and the annual seroreversion rate was 3.5%, and seroprevalence in the population had reached 91.2% by age 10.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The study reveals the micro-geographic variation in malaria endemicity in the highland eco-system; this validates the usefulness of sero-epidemiological tools in assessing malaria endemicity in the era of decreasing sensitivity of conventional tools.</p
Evolutionary Map of the Universe: Tracing Clusters to High Redshift
The Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) is a new radio-telescope being built in
Western Australia. One of the key surveys for which it is being built is EMU
(Evolutionary Map of the Universe), which will make a deep (~10 {\mu}Jy/bm rms)
radio continuum survey covering the entire sky as far North as +30\circ. EMU
may be compared to the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS), except that it will have
about 45 times the sensitivity, and five times the resolution. EMU will also
have much better sensitivity to diffuse emission than previous large surveys,
and is expected to produce a large catalogue of relics, tailed galaxies, and
haloes, and will increase the number of known clusters by a significant factor.
Here we describe the EMU project and its impact on the astrophysics of

Juvenile Hormone (JH) Esterase of the Mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus Is Not a Target of the JH Analog Insecticide Methoprene
Juvenile hormones (JHs) are essential sesquiterpenes that control insect development and reproduction. JH analog (JHA) insecticides such as methoprene are compounds that mimic the structure and/or biological activity of JH. In this study we obtained a full-length cDNA, cqjhe, from the southern house mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus that encodes CqJHE, an esterase that selectively metabolizes JH. Unlike other recombinant esterases that have been identified from dipteran insects, CqJHE hydrolyzed JH with specificity constant (kcat/KM ratio) and Vmax values that are common among JH esterases (JHEs). CqJHE showed picomolar sensitivity to OTFP, a JHE-selective inhibitor, but more than 1000-fold lower sensitivity to DFP, a general esterase inhibitor. To our surprise, CqJHE did not metabolize the isopropyl ester of methoprene even when 25 pmol of methoprene was incubated with an amount of CqJHE that was sufficient to hydrolyze 7,200 pmol of JH to JH acid under the same assay conditions. In competition assays in which both JH and methoprene were available to CqJHE, methoprene did not show any inhibitory effects on the JH hydrolysis rate even when methoprene was present in the assay at a 10-fold higher concentration relative to JH. Our findings indicated that JHE is not a molecular target of methoprene. Our findings also do not support the hypothesis that methoprene functions in part by inhibiting the action of JHE
